In-language videos to help new arrivals with renting

Newly arrived migrants are common targets for unscrupulous landlords, and many say navigating Australia's housing-rental market can be confusing. Now, in Victoria, in-language videos have been introduced to help new arrivals overcome challenges like the language barrier and the absence of rental histories. Luke Waters reports.

Music with mates: how Melbourne's music scene is helping young migrants

The idea behind the new Music With Mates project in Melbourne is simple: every young person aged between 18 and 30 who loves music should be able to access it, live, no matter where you were born.

It's a social collaboration - founded by Kevin Mitchell, Jebediah's frontman (AKA 'Bob Evans') and Christine Leahy -that hooks up musicians who have donated free tickets to their concerts with young, newly arrived migrants wanting to see a concert.

On Thursday 11 August 2016, the local member for Werribee, Mr Tim Pallas MP will launch Wyndham Community & Education Centre’s Reconnect Program.

Wyndham CEC successfully applied for the program for Wyndham & Hobson’s Bay.

The program forms part of the State Government’s Back to Work Scheme.

Reconnect targets young people aged 15-24, without a Year 12 or equivalent who are not in education, training or employment but who require training & skills in order to make the transition to further education, training or employment.

CEO, Ms Jennie Barrera stated, “vulnerable young people who leave school early face significant barriers in their education, training and employment pathways & transitions unless targeted interventions and services are put in place to support them.”

Wyndham CEC has partnered with Whitelion & the WynBay LLEN to deliver the Reconnect Program across the two municipalities. A fulltime Youth Coordinator has been employed to lead the program.

Ms Barrera acknowledged the Andrew’s government for this important initiative and for their support of young people across Victoria. “The program will target young people currently falling through the cracks and help to improve their education and employment opportunities long term.”

For details about Reconnect, please call the Wyndham Education & Community Centre Inc., on 03 9742 4013

Karenni refugee from Burma secure in a place to call home in Wyndham

He will be 40 next year but, for the first time in his life, Mae Sie Win is enjoying a basic state of grace most of us take for granted, living without fear and in a place where he feels he belongs.

His trauma dates back decades: as a 13 year old, taken by the Burmese military, kicked and beaten and barely fed as he carried their supplies across mountainous terrain; as an 18 year old, fleeing Burma to the safety of a refugee camp; then the better part of two decades as a stateless person in that camp.
